Tech jobs in Michigan are on the rise, but are we up to the challenge?<\/p>\n<p>AnnArbor.com recently reported a disparity in the increasing high-tech manufacturing positions available and the lack of qualified local graduates to fulfill them, prompting a recent state initiative, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitalent.org\/mat2\/\">Michigan Advanced Technician Training Program<\/a>, to provide a work-study program in partnership with local auto firms.<\/p>\n<p>According to Online Tech\u2019s Director of Human Resources &amp; Administration, Deb Webster, \u201ceven in Michigan\u2019s slowly-recovering economy, top candidates can be challenging to find, particularly in technology fields related to our work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michigan\u2019s high-tech job growth rate places the state at 6.9 percent, ahead of the national 2.6 percent average and firmly in third place over other states. When asked about the trends in local candidates, Webster said: \u201cI\u2019m encouraged by recent trends yielding increasing numbers of qualified candidates with the skills and experience we need, particularly candidates who are in our geographic areas (primarily in and around Ann Arbor and Flint), as well as out-of-state candidates from Michigan who are looking to return to their home state. I think that part of this latter trend may be candidates\u2019 positive responses to Pure Michigan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitalent.org\/michagain\/\">MichAGAIN<\/a> initiative to bring talent back to the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to MITalent.org, the MichAGAIN campaign encourages talented candidates with Michigan ties to stay, return, and\/or invest in their state. Through partnerships with universities, businesses, and economic development partners around Michigan, the initiative aims to reach out to both young and seasoned professionals to promote opportunities to come back home.<\/p>\n<p>To assist in attracting and growing local talent, Online Tech\u2019s plans to expand across the Midwest means we are hiring for several new positions in technical, sales, and administration.<\/p>\n<p>As Webster said of finding technical candidates, \u201cWe\u2019re always on the lookout for strong IT talent, particularly people who have worked in a data center environment, when we can find that specific type of experience. This is a full-time exempt (salaried) position working in one of our three data centers, reporting to our CEO and responsible for the budget, people, process and systems for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Building, power, and cooling at three data centers, growing to five+ data centers over the next five years;<\/li>\n<li>Network, cloud, and storage systems:<\/li>\n<li>Network, including circuits\/ISP; core routers; cable plant; access switches<\/li>\n<li>Cloud, including servers\/SANs, and network switches<\/li>\n<li>Storage, firewalls, Universal Threat Management (UTM), load balancers, etc.<\/li>\n<li>A 24\/7 technical staff of six people and growing<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0A budget of $1M+ and growing over the coming years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More about the data center market and Online Tech:<\/p>\n<p>The managed data center business is expected to grow to $18.5 billion by 2015.
