GM is currently seeking tax abatements for the 100,000 square foot data center, according to DataCenterKnowledge.com. The building will include utility space, office, dock areas and an equipment yard.<\/p>\n<p>DataCenterKnowledge.com also reports that the data center is one of the two in Michigan remaining from GM\u2019s major IT consolidation that resulted in trimming 23 worldwide data centers. The trend in streamlining IT can be seen on a larger scale in the U.S. government&#8217;s operations as well. In August 2011, I wrote about the <a href=\"https:\/\/otavawebsite.wpengine.com\/blog\/breakdown-of-federal-cloud-computing\/\">Federal Cloud Computing Strategy<\/a> that aimed to revamp old IT infrastructure design with the goal of consolidating and reducing nearly 2,100 data centers by 40 percent by 2015. That goal was to realize the estimated $5 billion in yearly savings with the help of <a href=\"https:\/\/otavawebsite.wpengine.com\/solutions\/cloud\/\">cloud computing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 613px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Mid-Michigan Data Center\" src=\"https:\/\/www.otava.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/mid-michigan.png\" alt=\"Mid-Michigan Data Center\" width=\"613\" height=\"228\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mid-Michigan Data Center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Online Tech\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/otavawebsite.wpengine.com\/operations\/locations\/michigan-cloud-and-data-centers\/\/locations\/mid-michigan-data-center\">Mid-Michigan data center<\/a> was originally built by EDS as General Motor\u2019s disaster recovery data center, and we\u2019ve invested significantly to upgrade and achieve the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s (EPA\u2019s) ENERGY STAR efficiency standards, putting us in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency. We\u2019re also planning to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/business\/mid-michigan\/index.ssf\/2013\/01\/online_tech_gets_two_ceos_as_i.html\">invest another $1 million<\/a> into the data center located in Flint, Michigan by the end of 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The state of Michigan\u2019s CIO, David Behan, recently delivered a speech on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/otavawebsite.wpengine.com\/blog\/michigan-cio-david-behen-michigan-is-the-ideal-place-for-data-centers\/\">Reinventing Michigan Through IT<\/a><\/em>, and gave the state glowing reviews for its ideal location for data centers. The state government is also seeking an overhaul of its current aging IT infrastructure, comprised of 400 legacy systems more than a decade old.
